Bora Bora has two great surfing spots: Teavanui Pass and a right off the reef out behind Motu Pitiaau. They adapt to changing weather patterns, allowing for a sort of extended surf season. We boarded Raimanu’s boat and set out in search of the perfect break.

What Makes Bora Bora Ideal For Surfing?

The left off Teavanui Pass is the most well-known, most frequented, and easy to reach. On one side, there’s Motu Tapu and Mt Otemanu, while on the other, there’s the Pearl Beach Resort.

It pumps in a south/southwesterly swell, and Raimanu went out to show us how to execute it in what were actually fairly decent surf conditions:

The right on the other side of the pass also works, but only in a north/northwesterly breeze, which is the prevailing wind in a cyclone! The right can be the way to go starting around December each year, especially after cyclonic conditions in the area.

A nice south-easterly swell is also pumped in from the right. The wave will break just past Motu Ahura’s eastern edge and follow the reef around to the Pearl Beach Resort, giving surfers a spectacular ride of 150 metres or more.

The same winds also allow surfers to visit Bora Bora’s other spot, a little-known right that breaks along Point Tupititi, a westward projecting part of the reef beyond Motu Pitiaau.

We drove across to the westernmost part of Motu Pitiaau, a magical place originally reserved for Club Med clients and now home to Raimanu’s family.

It’s a bit of a trip from here, but the rewards can be worth it, as reef breaks can provide a continuous wave in the appropriate conditions. We walked along the coral-filled part that divides the motu from the reef’s seashore extremities after leaving the boat near Raimanu’s. The location is easy to find, although it is a long walk. If you manage to travel via the interior of the island, you’ll pass through lovely plantations of tiare tahiti and pandanus before being knocked out by the abrupt presence of waves, backed by the imposing islands of Tahaa and Raiatea:

I had brought a mask instead of a surfboard because of the forecasted circumstances. Taking the current from near the surf site for a fantastic ride back to where we left the boat, taking in bands of leopard rays along the way, is a wonderful, effortless drift.

Other Activities To Do In Bora Bora

• Scuba Diving

The emerald lagoon’s waters are exclusively yours to enjoy, especially throughout November and the next four months. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the depths of the pure waters and go on an amazing scuba diving trip. Just remember to bring your fins, mask, and oxygen tank with you.

The trips last about two hours and are led by a guide. It involves a visit to a little islet where you can swim and let go of everything, in addition to the lagoons that surround the bungalows.

If the weather plays a role in your decision to visit the world’s most enchanting spot, keep in mind that the weather in Bora Bora is mostly warm and dry.

The year begins with temperatures ranging from 23°C to 30°C from January to May, then drops to 21°C to 28°C from June to September, before ending with temperatures ranging from 22°C to 29°C. You have to admit, that’s rather spectacular. So, if you’re a sun lover, don’t wait any longer.
